One of the privileges of travelling with a local is accessing their world. On a cruise of the Mekong, our Travel Indochina guide took us to his home village – a once war-torn place terrorised by the Viet Cong, it is now a happy and industrious community on a tranquil reach of the river. He walked us around the streets amid daily life – showing us the school and the temple and introducing us to his neighbours who greeted us with wide smiles. It was a fascinating slice of life, unedited. This was one gorgeous family who happily let me take their picture. There was no problem asking if I could take a photo here. This fellow took me by surprise and gave me his widest grin. www.travelindochina.com.au Words by Jane Hodges & Maree Azzopardi Photography by Maree Azzopardi
